Sustainable Fashion TECH - May Issue

Issue 3
MAy 2023

Is fashion TEch being designed as a sustainability tool?

The digital future is knocking on our door and, finally, the fashion industry will undergo the radical changes we have been anticipating for so long. There is no secret that since the Industrial Revolution, the fashion industry has been frantically increasing production and lowering quality in terms of jobs and materials until we have turned fashion into the polluting-out-of-control animal it is right now. All this is based on an "extract-use-dump" system, built on the shoulders of low-paid factory workers and non-renewable natural resources.

Not to state the obvious but, since we are undergoing a revolution, wouldn’t it be wise to design the new digital future of fashion in a sustainable way so we don’t fall back into the same mistakes we had done before? Let’s explore AI, the Metaverse, and everything in between.

Enjoy!

Metaverse Fashion Week had big brands but few people | The Verge

In this article, Jay Peters talks about his experience on the Metaverse Fashion Week that took place a few weeks ago in Decentraland, the virtual world that organised the event. The organiser admitted that unique visitors dropped from 108,000 in 2022 to just 26,000 this year. And even though the words from Charles Hambro, co-founder and CEO of GEEIQ “no one cares about the metaverse anymore,” are out there and in everybody's minds, “ the reality of the situation is, more people are gaming this year than last year. So one needs to ask the question: is it the metaverse that’s failing, or just particular virtual environments that haven’t been built for purpose? Controversy is served. Check more about Metaverse Fashion Week 2023 here.

Understanding Digital Fashion - A Conversation with Lady Pheønix

by Runaway by NFT Now

An interview with Lady Phoenix to go a bit deeper into the ethics and boundaries of digital fashion. "I often say that fashion is layer zero of the metaverse. Digital fashion challenges us to define our identity and contributions to a collective digital future. Each of us has a choice in who we want to be, how we show up, and what tribe we add our voice and vision to."

Platforms of Digital Fashion

Replicant Fashion / ARTISANT

The first one was founded and the second one was co-created by the digital fashion designer Regina Turbina. They are Web3 Digital Fashion platforms to create and trade digital fashion garments, and you can also try them on. She was inspired by The Fabricant experience and her own, due to people asking her to create digital garments for them to show on social media. These platforms present a possible fashion future; a future that allows a more transparent connection between the artist and the consumer, and celebrates uniqueness and diversity at the same time, without harming the planet. Regina Turbina has done a number of collaborations with well-known brands and developed Ophelica, where she mixes elements of nature in her works and combines classic fabrics with unusual metallic textures.

Dematerialised

The word dematerialization means the move from physical certificates to electronic bookkeeping. For example, the transition from physical CDs and newspapers to digital MP3s and mobile applications. This digital fashion marketplace was thought of as the transition to a more transparent, responsible, and sustainable way of producing, selling, and wearing fashion. They operate with blockchain and NFTs with a lower carbon footprint. They stand for equity, accessibility, and inclusion, and they commit to lowering their environmental impact and improving their social impact.

The Fabricant

Digital fashion brand by Kerry Murphy, Amber Jae Slooten, and Adriana Hoppenbrouwer was born as an answer to the polluting fashion industry. In their designs, they combine historic elements with futuristic inspirations. They stand for slow fashion, fair labor, and sustainability because producing digital garments takes plenty of time and skilled individuals, they emphasize on quality over quantity. Their platform works with FLOW, a blockchain where a transaction consumes less energy than two Google searches. Generally, the garments in the collection are made by two designers, one for the garment and one for the textile. I love that, even though it is digital fashion, both of them design consciously with sustainability in mind.
